Whether you would like to have your face placed near by a famous actor/actress, a friend or a trip you have never been to, this tutorial is right for you. The tutorial is designed for absolute beginners. And with few easy steps you could simply have that image you have been fantasizing about.

I used a funny poster to attach Bella's face on top of it for this tutorial but with few tweaks, you could follow the same steps using any other background. Now I have nothing against Kristine but Bella was always complaining in Twilight so the image fits.

Level: Beginners

Difficulty: Easy

Getting Ready

  • Step One: Save both images 1 and 2 to your computer. Simply right click on the image and click on "Save Image As...". You could also use the shortcut and hit ctrl -c.
  • Step Two: Open Photoshop and click on File --> New
  • Step Three: Click on File --> Open and browse for the poster that you have just saved.
  • Step Four: Follow the same steps to open the face that you are trying to paste.

Copying the Face

  • Step One: Open Kristine's image and click on the Magnetic Laysoo Tool (L) found in the toolbar.
  • Step Two: Similarly to image 3, use the tool to crop Kristine's face and neck and some of the hair. Avoiding cropping the ears.
  • Step Three: Once you are done, double click and this will create the dotted shape around her face. See image 4.
  • Step Four: Click on Edit --> Copy.

Pasting the Face and the Shoulder

  • Step One: Switch to the other image.
  • Step Two: Click on Edit --> Paste. By doing so you are placing another layer on top of Image 1. You can enable and disable any of these layers by clicking on the layer and then clicking on the eye icon found by the layer. See image 5.
  • Step Three: Click on Edit --> Free Transform to relocate the image. Place the pasted image into the face area. Try your best to have both chins covering each other. You can manipulate the size of the image by dragging the borders surrounding the image. Make sure you have clicked on the new layer before doing this. The layer you have just pasted.
  • Step Four: You should now have an image similar to image 6. You should also have 3 layers - the background, the face and the shoulder.
  • Step Five: Do the same steps to crop Kristine's shoulder and place it on the man's shoulder. But since her right shoulder is covered with hair, copy and paste the left shoulder. See Step Two.
  • Step Six: Rotate the shoulder image by clicking on Edit --> Transform --> Rotate. See Image 6.

Fixing the Hair

There are many ways to change the colour of the hair but for the scope of this tutorial, we will go with the easiest and least efficient way. This method was mainly chosen to help create a funky look.

  • Step One: Use the Eyedropper Tool (I) to sample a certain colour from the image. You can either sample her original brownish colour or the colour of the man's hair.Click on the Eyedropper tool found in the toolbar. Using the tool, just click on the hair.
  • Step Two: Click on the Brush Tool (B) and keep on drawing extra extensions of hair to add volume to the hair and to create a more consistent look between Kristine's hair and the man's hair. Depending on how much volume you would like to add, set up the size of the Brush. I used size 13 to draw over the main hair but size 3 to draw the end of the roots. See Image 7.
  • Step Three: Using the same tool in Step Two, you could create extra black dots on the bottom of the image. The Brush Tool was size 19. See Image 8

Funky Look

  • Step One: Make sure the Background layer is selected and click on Filter --> Artistic --> Watercolor.
  • Step Two: A window similar to image 9 will pop up. Try out the different options found under Brush Strokes, Distort, Sketch, Stylize and Texture. To create a funky oil painting look, we will go with the watercolor option.
  • Step Three: Click OK. Select the other layer which should include the face, the hair and the shoulder. Then follow the same steps. See Images 9 and 10.

Amending the Text

Achieving the water colour appearance will distort any text found in the image. To fix this follow the following steps.

  • Step One: Click on Eyedropper Tool (I) the same way you used it to fix the hair. Only sample the white colour found beneath the current text.
  • Step Two: Use the Brush Tool (B) to delete the current text.
  • Step Three: Click on the Horizontal Type Tool (T). Drag over the white area. Type the desired text. In this example, I wrote "Arrested For: Being You...". Highlight the text and using the upper panel, alter the text's size and colour. See Image 11.

Nice job keep the good work up! As 'they' say "practice makes perfect"

Understanding layers takes some time.

Try the 'feathering' part of 'selecting' as well!

noorin Hub Author 22 months ago

Thanks agvulpes. I have been practising since I posted this and Im getting the hang of the layers. I will definitely give both those options a try.

Thanks dgraphicrookie, You could totally skip the last step. Since this tutorial is purely for beginners, I thought it would be good to expose extra tools.

When trying to put someones face on top of other, its very important that the perspective and lighting conditions of the two pictures must be similar if not absolutely same , otherwise it will give u a hard time trying to stitch them together, especially if they are out of perspective! Good tutorial overall..

@Tutsnow, ur comment is absolutely true ... I honestly I was just playing around with the tool ... Anyhow keep on stepping by =)

Nice simple tutorial overall, glad you mentioned it was first time working with it. I had noticed the errors and was considering saying something since I have proofed many images in Photoshop over the last few years, but don't want to be negative. I will have to check out your other hubs to see what you have done lately.

I'm fairly new to Photoshop and trying to learn how to use the tools for changing photos. It is interesting on how you can put your face, or a different one, on top of another face in a photo, poster, or cartoon. It does seem like fun and a simple tutorial for beginners.

Even if someone found an error in your article, it looks as though the basic steps would be the same. Time has a way of changing information though, many times to different versions, but unless it's completely different and much has changed, I wouldn't delete it. You can always go back in, edit, and update it. Thanks for sharing.
